Skilled Tradesmen Continue to Be in High Demand

What can local business owners do to mitigate this pressing need?

Mid-2023, job openings dropped to the lowest level in about 2.5 years. Meanwhile, the need for skilled tradesmen continues to increase, making it very tricky for home services business owners, like electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and construction/carpentry companies, to find qualified tradesmen to meet their demand and reach business goals.

 

Talk with any home services business owner and most will tell you their biggest challenge is finding good talent. It’s a constant battle for them. However, there are ways to mitigate the deficiency. There’s no “one simple fix”. However, there are a multitude of things that can be done:

 

  • Solidify your culture, core values, and what your company stands for: Put it on your website, get it out there in your marketing and “sell the sizzle” when interviewing candidates.


  • Ramp up your careers page on your website: Add video testimonials of your employees talking about their experience working for your organization. Have them highlight what makes your company different than the many other places they could go. Additionally, add pictures of company outings, training sessions, and other fun and engaging activities you do.



  • Find a recruiting firm that specializes in home services recruitment: While there are not a lot of recruiting organizations that are niche-focused on the home services industry, they are out there. These firms know the challenges of business owners in the trades and as a result, can “talk the talk” of the industry, relate well to those they are interviewing, and are more affordable than traditional recruiting firms.

 

Finding the right people for your organization, as it continues to grow, can be done. However, do not take attracting and retaining these team members lightly. Be very intentional about how you are tackling this issue. Consider hiring the recruiting help you need and build a plan with them. Measure results and if it’s working, stay the course. If not, try another direction. It’s a lot like marketing. Organizations need to always be in front of the market, actively looking. The flip side is, struggling. And who wants that?
